Facebook unleashes new weapons of user engagement!

By on October 1, 2015

Competition for a larger share of user’s time is getting more intense amongst social networks as advertising revenues are directly into web rating points. Just as in television you have TRP’s; in social media you have complex metrics known as WRP’s that define the popularity of a social network. And inspite of having a near-monopoly in the social media space, Facebook knows that it has to reinvent itself constantly in line with changing technologies to stay relevant as new technologies have the potential to create billion dollar industries overnight and make existing fads obsolete.

Here’s a peek into the new features to be rolled out shortly

  • Profile Videos: This will certainly add to the appeal of your profile pic. Users will now be able to upload 7 second videos of themselves instead of just still profile pics. The looping videos will auto-play without sound (unless clicked) and will surely keep users hooked to facebook for hours through sheer visual delight.

  • Featured Photos: Users can expect better, quicker responses for their friend requests as the receiver will not have to strain their memory to recollect an old school-mate or childhood friend owing to the five featured photo option that will get activated shortly.
  • Temporary Profile pics: Taking cue from the recent incident when 26million users decided to set their profile pic rainbow in support of gay marriage, this does not come as a surprise. Users will be able to set a set time-frame after which their profile pic will revert to the old one.
  • Visibility Controls and Bio: Showcasing your persona to those who matter and keeping it hidden from unwanted creatures is now possible through in-line privacy controls which were until now embedded deep inside the About us section. The Bio field character limit has also been increased to 100.

  • Mobile-Friendly: This step will certainly benefit mobile users; many of them are first time internet users in the developing world. Unlike the web where the design and text is more left aligned, Facebook has now decided to embrace a centre-aligned mobile friendly design.

Just wait for a few days, before a full-scale rollout of these features happen that will surely push other networks to come out with even more mind-blowing features.
